History is more than just dates and facts—it’s the story of humanity, full of lessons that help us understand the present and shape the future. For Year 9 students who have recently studied the First World War, history is a powerful tool that allows them to grasp the complexities of past events and their lasting impact. But learning history doesn’t have to be confined to textbooks and lectures.

History provides us with the opportunity to learn from the past, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of our world. By studying the First World War, Year 9 students gained insight into one of the most pivotal moments in history. The war shaped the course of the 20th century, influencing everything from global politics to the lives of ordinary people. Understanding this history helps students recognize the sacrifices made, the causes of conflict, and the importance of peace. It also fosters an awareness of the complexities that shape the world today, encouraging students to think critically about current global issues.

While traditional methods of learning history, like reading textbooks or watching documentaries, offer valuable information, they often lack the immersive experience that helps students truly engage with the subject. We used VR headsets to transport students to the trenches of the First World War, allowing them to experience history in a way that textbooks cannot match.

Imagine standing in the middle of a trench, hearing the sounds of battle, and feeling the atmosphere of the time. With VR, Year 9 students were able to walk through the war-torn landscapes of France and Belgium, explore iconic battlefields like the Somme, and witness the historical events firsthand. This immersive experience helped students visualize the conditions soldiers faced and understand the gravity of the war. By stepping into the shoes of a soldier, students developed a deeper emotional connection to history, making it easier for them to grasp the human experience behind the historical events.

Some of the comments from the students ‘I thought I was going to go with them, I actually thought I was going to move with them’, ‘It was like I was really there’, ‘That was great’.

An overwhelmingly positive experience for all!
